Quitman is located about 12 minutes South of Stable View Cottages on Highway 154. Simply hang a left out of the drive, and you’ll be on your way! Quitman is small, but it has several places to eat and a great park. It is also the county seat for Wood County, so as soon as you get to town, you’ll see the historic courthouse on the left at the first intersection.

Governor Jim Hogg City Park

Governor Jim Hogg City Park is a large park with a big playground and splash pad. The park has several different features including:

Stinson Home – The house sits at the back of the park and was built in 1869. The Wood County Master Gardeners took an interest in the house and researched what types of plants and gardens would be found around a home in the 1800s. They then built new flower beds and planted heirloom plants from the era.

Botanical Garden – You will also find a large outdoor botanical garden area with a variety of unique plants and trees and a small walking trail.

RV Park – Several RV spots are available for nightly rental in the park.

Pavilion – There’s a large covered pavilion with seating and a small stage.

There are several events that take place here. One of our favorites is the Easter egg hunt held by Church on the Rock. They have around 10,000 eggs filled with candy and money. Kids are divided into age groups and then it’s a free for all to see who can get the most eggs and find the ones with money.

Another popular event is the Old Settler’s Reunion. This is a fall festival held every year with a carnival and various events that take place.

Places to Eat

There are several restaurants in Quitman that we enjoy. Wing Dingers has a unique space on the Square and serves pizza and wings. They also have very good burgers.

Red Dome Steakhouse serves country homestyle cooking with a wide variety and great desserts. The sundae is huge!

Peralta’s is a great Mexican restaurant. We really like their Shrimp Quesadillas.

Quitman’s Dairy Queen on 700 S. Main holds fun car shows on Friday nights during the summer and will have free live music.

Seth’s Lake Fork Creek Steak and Seafood is located just outside of town on the way to Mineola. They are easy to miss, as they are up the hill and on the left. They have great Cajun cooking!

Of course, if you’re coming to Lake Fork to fish, then you need to know where the marinas are! Just 4-5 minutes from Stable View Cottages, you’ll find Oak Ridge Marina and the Minnow Bucket. Both have tackle shops, sell bait and have boat drops. The public boat ramp is also located just 3 minutes away.
