Just a short 18.5 miles will take you from Stable View Cottages to the city of Mineola, Texas. Our recommendation is to take Highway 154 to 37, and then follow that into town, although there are two other routes if you prefer (they’re a bit longer though). Whichever route you take, Mineola is well worth a visit.

The city of Mineola sits at the intersection of Highways 69 and 80, and while it only has a population of around 5,000, there’s actually a lot to see and do here.

Where to Spend Time

One of our favorite places to spend time in Mineola is at the local farmer’s market. You’ll find it located at the Pavilion on East Front Street. It also runs for much of the year, from May all the way through October. Stop in to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables, handmade foods, handicrafts, and a lot more.

Another of our favorites is the Mineola Nature Preserve, which covers almost 3,000 acres. It’s right on the Sabine River, and offers a wide range of exploration opportunities, from picnicking to hiking.

Events of Note

You’ll find a host of events held in Mineola throughout the year, including:

  • July 4th – Mineola holds a fireworks extravaganza every year at the civic center with food, entertainment, and more.
  • Warehouse of Terror – If you’ll be in town during October and love a good scare, the Warehouse of Terror is held every weekend and on Halloween itself.

Where to Eat

If you’re in Mineola, you’ll have no shortage of excellent places to eat, particularly if you love barbeque. One of our personal favorites is CowBurners BBQ and Taproom on North Johnson Street. Nothing really compares to great Texas barbeque and a cold beer. They also offer a lot of other options, ranging from pulled pork tacos to the three-meat plate. If you’re a craft beer fan, this place is for you, too. They regularly update their beer menu on their Facebook page, so check it out to see what’s pouring.

Of course, there’s more to eat here than just great barbeque. There’s Whataburger over on North Pacific Street in the Walmart parking lot. There’s a Subway just down the road if you’d rather have a sub. Sonic, McDonald’s and other national chains are also in town.

If you’re looking for something a bit different, we’d recommend Southern Maid Donuts on North Pacific, or La Waffalata over on East Broad. Stop by Between Friends and visit the Fudge Store inside to satisfy your sweet tooth.

As you can see, there’s plenty on offer in Mineola, and there are quite a few other towns in the area worth visiting and reachable with just a short drive. However, you don’t have to go far from Stable View Cottages to find fun. The public boat ramp is just three minutes away, and there are also two full-service marinas with gas, bait and tackle, food and more within five minutes of the property.
